Phone batteries are consumable — they wear down a little every charge cycle no matter what you do. But good habits can stretch that lifespan by a year or more. Here are the eight that actually make a difference.
1. Avoid charging to 100% every single time
Lithium batteries are happiest staying between roughly 20% and 80%. Charging to full every night, every day, adds extra wear over time. If your phone supports an 'optimized charging' setting, turn it on.
2. Don't let it sit at 0% for long
Letting your battery drain completely and stay there is just as hard on it as overcharging. Try to plug in before you dip below 20%.
3. Use the charger that came with your phone (or a certified one)
Cheap, uncertified cables and bricks can deliver inconsistent power that stresses the battery and charging port. It's worth spending a little more on a quality replacement.
4. Take the case off if your phone gets hot while charging
Heat is one of the fastest ways to degrade a battery. Thick cases trap heat during charging — especially with wireless charging. Take it off if you notice your phone running warm.
5. Be careful with overnight wireless charging
Wireless charging is convenient but generates more heat than a cable. If you charge overnight, a cable is gentler on your battery long-term.
6. Keep your phone out of direct sun and hot cars
Extreme heat is more damaging to battery health than extreme cold. Don't leave your phone on a dashboard or windowsill in direct sunlight.
7. Update your software
Both Android and iOS regularly ship battery and charging efficiency improvements. Staying updated isn't just about features — it's part of battery care.
8. Get your battery health checked once it feels 'off'
If your phone is hot to the touch, drains fast even when idle, or randomly shuts down, get the battery checked rather than just living with it. A worn battery can sometimes cause other components to wear out faster too.
