iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max & iPhone Duo: Features, Pros, Cons, and Which One to Buy

Apple's September 9, 2026 "Surprise and Shine" event shipped three new iPhones at once: the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo. The standard iPhone 18, iPhone Air 2, and iPhone 18e are being held back for spring 2027 — this launch is the premium end of the lineup only.

iPhone 18 Pro & Pro Max: What's New

Both Pro models run Apple's new A20 Pro chip (2nm process) paired with a next-generation vapor chamber, which Apple says delivers the highest sustained performance in iPhone history. The headline camera change is a variable-aperture 48MP Fusion Main camera — the first time an iPhone's aperture physically adjusts rather than simulating depth of field in software.

The six-blade aperture mechanism offers four manual settings:

• ƒ/1.48 — low light
• ƒ/1.8 — portraits (Apple's recommended balance of light and depth of field)
• ƒ/2.8 — general use
• ƒ/4.0 — group shots, more of the scene in focus

Battery life improved across the board: the Pro reaches 34 hours of video playback (up from 31), and the Pro Max reaches 43 hours (up from 37). Charging is faster too — 50% in about 15 minutes on a 60W cable, or 30 minutes wirelessly on a 35W pad.

Pricing: iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, Pro Max at $1,299 — both up from the prior generation's $1,099 starting point. Available since September 18, 2026. Full specs on Apple's official announcement.

iPhone 18 Pro — Pros

• First iPhone with a physically variable aperture, not just software bokeh
• Meaningful battery gains without a size change
• A20 Pro's 2nm process should mean better sustained performance under load (gaming, video export) than any prior iPhone

iPhone 18 Pro — Cons

• $100 price increase over last year's starting price
• Variable aperture is a Pro-only feature — no trickle-down to cheaper models this cycle
• Design changes are incremental; nothing here is a "must-upgrade" if you own an iPhone 16 Pro or newer

iPhone Duo: Apple's First Foldable

The Duo is the bigger story. Per Apple's own announcement, it opens from a 5.4-inch outer display to a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display, both with ProMotion and up to 3,000 nits peak brightness. Apple built it around a grade 5 titanium frame with a mirror-polished finish and a hinge made of over 100 components.

Under the hood it shares the A20 Pro chip with the standard Pro models, but with a custom vapor-chamber thermal design adapted from Apple Silicon's M-series to manage heat across two displays running simultaneously.

Camera: 48MP Fusion Main with an integrated 2x optical-quality telephoto, plus a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide — the same ultra-wide sensor as the Pro line. The FaceTime camera is hidden beneath the inner display.

Battery: dual batteries, one per side — up to 31 hours video on the inner display, 44 hours on the outer display, or about 24 hours of mixed use.

Software: iOS 27.1 brings the first Split View multitasking on iPhone, with Netflix, Zoom, and Slack already building dual-display-optimized versions of their apps.

Pricing: starts at $1,999 for 256GB, up to 2TB storage. On sale since October 23, 2026.

iPhone Duo — Pros

Real hands-on coverage from launch day — not just Apple's own marketing — backs up a few genuine strengths, per MacRumors' hands-on report and CNN Underscored's review:

• Reviewers who tried it called the software "really refined" and the overall experience "very polished" for a first-generation folding device
• The nano-texture inner display noticeably reduces crease visibility compared to competing folds — testers said they didn't notice it while watching video or gaming, even though it's still visible under certain lighting
• First-ever Apple Pencil support on an iPhone
• Split View multitasking is a genuinely new iPhone capability, not a reskinned iPad feature

iPhone Duo — Cons

• $1,999 starting price — reviewers are openly questioning whether that's justified, foldable or not
• The crease hasn't been eliminated, only reduced — it's still visible, just less than on rival folds
• Long-term hinge durability and real-world battery life are still unconfirmed even after hands-on time — as 9to5Google noted, those are exactly the two things that determine whether this is a landmark device or an expensive lesson a year from now
• eSIM-only, no physical SIM tray at all — a dealbreaker in regions where eSIM support is patchy

Which One Should You Actually Buy?

• Buy the iPhone 18 Pro if you want the best camera control Apple has ever shipped, in a familiar form factor, without paying foldable prices.
• Buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max if battery life is your top priority — 43 hours of video playback is the longest of any iPhone to date.
• Buy the iPhone Duo only if the multitasking and bigger inner screen are worth $700-800 over the Pro Max to you, and you're comfortable being an early adopter — durability and real battery life are still open questions.
