iPhone Back Glass Replacement: What's Actually Behind It

A cracked back panel is one of the most common things we see — and one of the most commonly rushed by inexperienced repairs. Here's why that glass is there in the first place, what's actually sitting right behind it, and why that matters for how it gets fixed.

Why the back is glass at all

Metal backs block electromagnetic fields, which is a problem for wireless charging and for antenna performance — a solid metal back would interfere with the signal between your phone and a charging pad or MagSafe accessory. Glass doesn't have that problem, which is the main reason Apple moved back to glass starting with the iPhone 8 and has kept it on every generation since, as Qi wireless charging and later MagSafe became standard features.

What's actually behind the glass

On MagSafe-equipped iPhones, a ring of magnets is bonded directly to the inside of the back glass — that's literally how MagSafe holds a charger or wallet in place. iFixit's own repair guide notes that during a back glass replacement, those magnets have to be carefully detached and moved onto the new glass without flipping their orientation; get that wrong and MagSafe stops working even though the phone looks fine. On newer models, the wireless charging coil itself is built into the back glass assembly, not mounted separately on the logic board — which is also why a cracked back panel can sometimes cause charging issues even before a repair touches it.

The rear camera sits directly behind the back glass too — a careless removal can crack the lens or dislodge the camera's seal, which is why this isn't a rush job. Photo: Raimond Spekking / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 (resized).

What it costs

The back glass assembly differs across iPhone generations — on newer models it includes the MagSafe magnets and charging coil built in, which affects the part cost. Frequently Asked Questions

Does cracked back glass mean my iPhone is unsafe to use?
A cracked back panel can still have sharp edges and lets dust or moisture reach the inside more easily than an intact one, so it's worth fixing rather than ignoring — but it's not an emergency the way a swelling battery is. Bring it in when convenient.
Will replacing the back glass affect MagSafe?
It can, if it's not done carefully. The MagSafe magnets are glued to the back glass itself, so they have to be moved to the new glass in the correct orientation — flip them and your iPhone won't hold a MagSafe charger or wallet properly. This is exactly the kind of detail a rushed or inexperienced repair gets wrong.
Does back glass replacement affect wireless charging?
On recent iPhones, the wireless charging coil is built into the back glass assembly itself, not a separate part. That's why a back glass crack can sometimes cause wireless charging issues even before replacement, and why the replacement part has to be the correct one for your exact model.
How much does iPhone back glass replacement cost in Vancouver?
It varies by model, since the back glass assembly differs across generations (and on newer models includes the MagSafe magnets and charging coil). Bring it in for a free inspection and we'll give you an exact quote before any work starts.
Can I just use a case instead of fixing it?
A case will stop it from getting worse day-to-day, but it won't fix the crack, and depending on severity you risk glass shards working loose inside the case over time. If you're not ready to repair it immediately, at minimum get a case on it to limit further damage.
